Reconstruction is performed in our private, fully accredited surgical facility in Edmonton, ensuring the highest level of safety, dignity, and support from consultation through recovery.
A Restorative Journey, Guided with Compassion
-
You may be a candidate for breast reconstruction if:
You’ve had a mastectomy or lumpectomy due to breast cancer or other conditions
You are seeking symmetry after surgery to one breast
You wish to revise or complete a previous reconstruction
You were born with congenital breast asymmetry or underdevelopment
Breast reconstruction can often be performed at the time of mastectomy (immediate reconstruction) or in a staged manner after initial healing (delayed reconstruction). Your Plastic Surgeon will help determine the timing, method, and approach that align with your health, lifestyle, and personal preferences.
-
There are several approaches to breast reconstruction, and your surgical plan will be tailored to your anatomy, oncologic treatments, and aesthetic goals. Common techniques include:
Implant-Based Reconstruction: Uses a silicone or saline breast implant, often combined with tissue expanders or acellular dermal matrices to create natural contours
Autologous (Flap) Reconstruction: Uses your own tissue from areas such as the abdomen, back, or thighs (e.g., DIEP, TRAM, or latissimus dorsi flaps)
Fat Grafting: Refines shape and contour or may be used alone in small-volume reconstructions
Nipple & Areola Reconstruction or 3D Tattooing: Finalizes the reconstruction with visual and sensory restoration
Some reconstructions are done in multiple stages to allow optimal healing, radiation recovery, or refinement. Your care team will guide you through each phase of your journey.
-
Your reconstruction journey doesn’t end in the operating room. At Meadowlark, we offer integrated healing strategies to support recovery, comfort, and aesthetic outcomes:
Pre-operative skin and tissue conditioning when possible
Supportive post-operative bras and dressings to aid healing
Medical-grade scar management, including topical therapies
Advanced laser treatments (Sciton BBL, Halo, and MicroLaserPeel) to improve skin tone, texture, and incision healing
Long-term cosmetic support to maintain symmetry and confidence over time
We are here to walk with you — every step of the way.
-
Recovery timelines vary depending on the type of reconstruction
Most patients require 2–4 weeks away from work or heavy activity
Swelling, bruising, and tightness are normal and resolve gradually
Some reconstructions are completed in staged surgeries over time
Final results evolve as tissues settle and scars mature
Your surgeon and our cosmetic care team will work closely with you to develop a customized plan that prioritizes safety, wellness, and long-term results.
-
Breast reconstruction, like any major surgery, includes risks:
Infection or wound healing complications
Fluid buildup (seroma)
Implant-related issues (if applicable)
Flap failure or fat necrosis (for tissue-based reconstructions)
Asymmetry or need for revision surgery
Changes in sensation or scarring
Anesthesia-related risks
Thorough planning, personalized care, and experienced surgical expertise all help reduce risks and support an empowering recovery.
